Lick of the week no. 20 - Kotzen Style Pentatonics
Hi everybody - I'm back with another legato/tapping lick, this time using A minor pentatonic. Although quite a 'vanilla' sounding scale, the idea is to create an interesting effect using the legato/tapping technique.

MonkeyFest 2011

MonkeyFest 2011
Monkey Fest - “The Monkey Lord” or Rob “Chappers” as he's also known, managed to pull it off this year with some help from his manager, Dan Davies, and several generous sponsors such as Marshall Amplifiers, Blackstar Amps and Andertons Music. The festival, which is the first of its kind, was held at the Bisley Pavilion, near Guildford in England, and features: a camp site, a hall (where the stage was set) and several shooting ranges that provided us with an early wakeup call each morning. Over 250 people attended - some coming from as far as Denmark and Canada to gorge themselves on the endless supply of tasty notes coming from the jam-packed stage. Several artists shared their musical knowledge with the audience, not something that you come across often at festivals, but this festival was about learning and interacting, and not just about watching and idolising. There are too many talented musicians for us to mention them all but we'll do our best.
Lick of the week no. 14 - Legato in A
For this weeks' "Lick of the Week" I chose a mixture of techniques that can be used over an A7 backing track.
Interview with Pete Callard
Pete Callard graduated as ‘Outstanding Student of the Year’ from Musicians' Institute in Hollywood, California. Since returning to England his many credits include Lionel Richie, Queen, Annie Lennox, The Bee Gees, Ronan Keating, Will Young, Shirley Bassey and Chaka Khan, alongside numerous TV shows, films and recordings. He also leads his own jazz quartet and is a member of the electronica outfit Shpongle, with whom he’s recorded several albums and performed around the world. In the guitar community he’s perhaps best known for his regular columns in Guitar Techniques, Guitarist and Total Guitar magazines, and was for many years a tutor at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford.

Live4Guitar met up with Pete at one of his West End show gigs in London to find out what he's been up to over the years. During the interview we were given some brilliant advice about how to get into the West End, and were shown an approach to teaching group guitar classes. He also shares his gigging experiences with us, how he came to play rock guitar and progress towards jazz and what it's like to write for some well-known guitar magazines.

We've also included some footage of Pete's playing, which will include a brief lesson on "Intervallic Improvisation".
